I designed this simple 4BR/4.5BA beach house in the fall of 2015 and it was finished a year later. At 3,024 sq.ft., it's a pretty simple, straighforward design with clean lines, a great layout and spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico. The open, floor plan is spacious. There's ample room for moving around the house without bumping in to one another. And the crisp, all-white interior theme is carried throughout allowing sun light to bounce off every surface making the house a happy place to be.

Description: 2,685 sq.ft.; 2BR/3.5BA

Comments: "An architect did our plans but the house is too big, too expensive, too modern. We want a two story, open living space; big master suite (up) with BIG walk-in closet and office. We want a dominant entry and stair tower. Somewhat contemporary but to fit in to "island living". All white inside and out with bamboo floors and wood cabinetry."

These owners got everything exactly as they wanted. The stair tower is massive and has 20' high glass block windows on three sides. Light flows through and into the striking white interior.

Rambling Beach House

Description: 5,200 sq.ft.; 6BR/4.5BA

Comments: A completely unique homesite demanded a completely unique floor plan. The house consists of two buildings interconnected with a covered stair tower and bridge-deck. The main house has a spacious living area with a second offset family room and plenty of view side screened porch area. The master suite is above with expansive views of the bay. The second building has two bedrooms and a jack and jill bathroom (down), with an office (up). There are views of the lake, the bayou and the bay from every room in the house.

The white "conservatory style" guest wing with 2 additional bedrooms; a bunk room; 2 full baths and a game room (down) with a very spacious craft room (up) was added later when the "additional" 9 grandkids came along!

Comments: "I want a traditional, Cracker-Style house with wrap around decks, open airy living space and enough sleeping space for my kids and grandkids when they all come to visit. I want to use a bright, cheery color scheme inside and out with furnishings to match..."beachy!"

This house fit this owner perfectly in every way and we hear over and over how much they love the house and the location.

Comments: "I want a quiet 'getaway room' -- away from the main part of the house; a separate 'room' for a spa-tub. Traditional Victorian look meets beach house"!

The house is called "Oz". It has a whimsical color pallet and a wonderful "turret" which contains the getaway and spa room.  It's a "stand-out" on the island!

Description: 3,100 sq.ft.; 5BR/3BA

Comments: "We want wood everywhere: inside and out; heavy beams, post and beam design; and a big oversized kitchen island because we like to entertain lots of guests, who love to watch the food preparation."

The Great Room soars well over two stories with huge beams following the vaulted ceiling roofline. The other half of the house contains downstairs "sleeping wing" with the vaulted Master Suite above -- which overlooks the Great Room. Spectacular!

Description: 3,224 sq.ft.; 4BR/4.5BA

Comments: "Road runs straight up to house; may have Bay and Gulf views from 3rd floor."

Due to cost cutting, the Tower "view" Room was almost left off. It stayed and so did the views! The owners were thrilled to have kept it.

Comments: A builder associate/friend always loved an old falling down "Cracker" house in Sopchoppy, FL. It inspired this version and was beautifully built to our plans. Living and Master Suite are all on the first floor and beautiful spiral wood staircase goes to the second floor space where an additional bed/bath and loft are located.

Description: 1,545 sq.ft.; 3BR/3BA

Comments: Lots are 25' wide; house is limited to 15' width; zoned "mixed residential or commercial" so plans must adapt. There are 20 lots; we want four design variations plus reverse plans should be available. Pick color combinations in advance for all 20 houses.

House location: Carrabelle Beach, FL
Description: 2,600 sq.ft.; 2BR/2.5BA

Comments: This home has special zoning allowing both living and cottage industry (office, studio, and associated other commercial type activities). The 1,150 sq.ft. first floor is a studio; the second floor is living and a third floor tower/view room is incorporated into the design. The building was situated at a 45 degree angle to the property lines and road out front. This design offered sweeping views (of the public beach across the road) from every room on all three floors (except for one back bedroom and bath).

Tuscan Farmhouse

This was a small (cramped) 1950's style ranch home with undersized rooms (for today's standards). Several spaces were expanded, walls removed or openings enlarged; as well as a master suite, office and 2-car garage added. The space is now very open and light filled.

French Country

"Something with sort of a European cottage feel to it," was the request this couple had for the exterior look of their home. The layout of the interior spaces have to flow nicely while achieving the goals of the exterior—this was seamless.

Part of the design criteria for this family from Moon Twp. was a four-bedroom home with a porch that wrapped around three sides; and a separate side entrance convenient to welcome clients into their home studio/office.

Stone Gabled Front on corner lot

This house was designed with a "bend" in it to maximize the spacious corner lot it was intended for. The "main part" of the house with it's strong reverse gable faces one street while the "connector" and garage face the other.

This house design with it's stone (and brick accents over the windows), stucco, decorative brackets, shuttered casements and hip roof, while fully "American", had some european influences.

Eclectic Moon Township house

The client gave us about four images as inspiration with some slight similarities among them. However, all of them were much larger (wider) houses in reality. This was a challenging lot which tapered toward the rear and dropped off away from the road for a walk out basement. We really need to maximize our width in the front while stepping back the design on the right side so we could get as much house as possible while "hugging" the side property set back line. This 5BR/5.5BA home has 4,066 sq.ft. of HVAC living space on first and second floor; with an additional 1,600+ sq.ft. of living space in the walk out basement for a total of 5,700 sq.ft. This house boasts both a first floor and second floor master, a huge dining room for large family gatherings, a (basement) second kitchen for entertaining, along with a theater, sauna, and endless storage underneath the 3-car garage above.

Hopewell Township home

These efficient designs were created in partnership with Bachman Builders for a small community of patio homes. They feature slab on grade foundations (no basement), a first floor master, "light" ADA compliance (wider doors and zero step entrances), and an efficient roof truss design that boasts two spacious bedrooms and a bath upstairs as well as a vaulted foyer and great room. These homes live larger than their square footage would suggest.

I’ve always dreamed of having a clean, modernist home, and I’m happy to say that Alice and her team at Atelier Cohen led the way to making that dream a reality! I couldn’t be more happy with the project, my house looks like it could be featured in a Kinfolk magazine. I expressed my wishes of having a clean, natural interior aesthetic and they truly delivered – the natural light in my newly designed home is to die for. They also helped me turn my dated, drab living room into a spacious and cozy space in which I can’t wait to host a party. I’ve worked with Alice on a few renovation projects and am still floored by her dedication to design and space planning. I had the pleasure of working with Alice on redecorating my childhood home that hadn’t been touched up since I was a teen in the 80’s. I knew it needed a huge refresh aesthetically, but I wasn’t sure where to start.
